I am looking forward to my MOOC starting next week. Yes I do wish I was taking it AT MIT, but that is not my lot in life. The class is taught by one of the leaders in the human genome project and is on organic biology with special emphasis on genetics and disease. Just what I am looking into this year. Info on the class is at http://edx.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=1822a33c054dc20e223ca40e2&id=dec7194f51&e=a037a2ca10. It only takes a 5-8 hour commitment per week. I cannot wait for it to start!

If you wish to comment on something from the Advanced Reading page, please do so in this thread. I see no way in Weebly to anchor this anywhere, so I will try to think of a better way as I go.
I added a new page discussing some recent studies about arthritis and genetic hemochromatosis. The goal was to make the terminology more attainable and to emphasis how these symptoms can be identified in us.
This will not likely get much comment on my site, but a new study showed that having the C282Y HFE SNP reduced cognitive loss from exposure to traffic pollution. No reasons were suggested. They also tested H63D but did not find the same result. So if I ever decide to go jogging in traffic
I really want to add a Next Terms page and start getting into Hepcidin and Genetics. I need to add more to the No Doctors page. It was finished in a hurry because the boys have been sick this weekend. I want to review the groupings of the menu tabs. Maybe go to a left nav bar instead of top. Or just group more together to make it more intuitive. I also need to think of where I want the New Research page. I think it will be a sub item under First Terms. That's it for now.
I was surfing a bit around the web today and came across this site: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/iron-000964.htm
It lists several medications that either reduce iron absorption, experience reduced absorption themselves in the presence of iron, experience decreased effectiveness or blood levels in the presence of iron or increase iron absorption. Shouldn't people diagnosed with Hemochromatosis be given recommendations regarding these medications? If you have a serum ferritin over 1000 and are taking ACE inhibitors for blood pressure wouldn't it be expected to be less effective? The purpose of this site was to inform people taking iron supplements about what medication interactions they should be aware of. So it is possible that these medications only have interactions when ingested with iron pills? I only have questions at this point. But the ones that jumps out at me are
I just created the Doctors and Old Posts sections. Please let me know if you find broken links or question any info. Much of the info in the Old Posts were from when I was pushing myself to learn more, so some things will need to be updated when I start making these notes into real pages. Next up will probably be a living list of research links that I am working on understanding.
My intent is to use this site to publish much of what I have been putting on Facebook or storing in my own documents. Most of that information will make the most sense as web pages. However, I will use this blog to add content that is more of an editorial nature or to share quick bits of information which will later become web pages. I hope to make this informative and slightly different than anything else that I have seen out on the web so far. My inspiration comes from the Facebook groups devoted to Hemochromatosis and all the wonderful people who contribute on a frequent basis out there.

AuthorMy name is Rick and the SNP which I refer to is a C282Y homozygous variant in my HFE gene. This site is devoted to making that sentence sound like simple English. Archives
